Cloud Predictions for 2012 from a Researcher’s Eye


Public Cloud: Ostrich mentality in cloud adoption will no longer be accepted in the Cloudy Environment. Public Cloud breakdowns won’t affect the mindset of an organization to adopt Cloud Computing because of the considerable improvement in the maturity of Cloud related tools, Mindset and Proof of Concepts.

XaaS: Everything as a Service will be a reality in 2012; from knowledge management to project and portfolio management, from BI applications to Platform templates…Every corner of IT will be covered by “as a Service” model.

Hybrid Model: Hybrid deployment model will gain popularity considering the dynamics of the industry. Clouds baby steps make the organizations uncomfortable and so cautious approach will gain acceptance with Hybrid Storage model.

According to use cases, public and private cloud will gain attraction rather than having discussion no pros and cons. Critical Business Applications and Data will remain on premise (Private Cloud). Big Companies will continue to work around private clouds and will be embracing public clouds. Virtual Private Cloud will gain more acceptances for mission critical application which are desperately seeking Cloud for Scalability and Elasticity with Utility based model.

Cloud Security: Security will become a CORE issue and no longer be like an Elephant in the Room. Security attacks will become smarter and remedies will have to be discovered in the predicted time frame else race will be lost. With CSA’s approach towards security and other organization becoming part of it; security will become robust.

Hackers will become more sophisticated. Single point of attack and targeted attack will be the main aim.

Myth of Freeware: Myth of Open Source solution’s economics will be broken and customers are realizing that Open Source solution’s customization or full featured versions will not fetch cost benefits as per expectations.

Acquisition: Adoption of various products will be done aggressively by major cloud service providers.

Cloud Management: Tools will become more popular due to “no one size fit” for all requirements and they will continue to bring multiple flavors of services.

Big Data and Business Intelligence: Big Data Processing will be a common use case for Cloud Adoption. Business Intelligence from social media will be a tempting use case with Public Cloud’s Elasticity,  scalability, Utility based model and Maturity of Cloud Security.

Mobile Cloud Computing: Client server processing will come onto the surface after the boom of tablets, pads and smart phones. Mobile Cloud Computing will become an integral part of the IT industry which will lead to the opportunity for the hackers-Mobile Attacks.

With central app storage (Apple’s iCloud), powerful mobile devices, analytical apps cloud business will become aggressively customer centric.

Compliances: Things will improve in the direction of Compliances but certain areas will be untouchable like Life science applications due its specific requirements until and unless some compromised way is found by customers, service providers and auditors which is highly unlikely.

Data Backup: Data backup on cloud considering various encryption approaches and tools to secure data will be a norm for enterprises. Database backup strategies will include Cloud as a medium to store compressed and encrypted full and incremental backups.

Green Cloud Computing: Go Green, will be the mantra for image building while adopting Cloud Computing.
